Milk Signups 6/15
Whoooo its been a weekend!!!
If you're in a hurry and looking for our milk drop signup sheet, go ahead and skip straight to the bottom of this post, because this one is longer than usual!
As you may have noticed, we frequently partner up with Bull Run Ranch because we share similar values in animal husbandry (both in companion animals and food animals), community involvement, and the importance of introducing children to various aspects of animal agriculture. The list of benefits is long, but at the top of it is respect, discipline, compassion, and a solid work ethic. Plus, the owners are pretty epic people that we love working with and hanging out with, so that's a bonus!
Yesterday, we hosted a barn cookout here at our farm; several kids who ride at Bull Run joined us for a trail ride, a milking demo at evening chores, AND they got to meet the newest member of the Bull Run Ranch/Kelly Farm family before we announced her arrival to the world.
She has yet to be named, but Iris (Leila's Holstein cross pictured below) gave us a beautiful heifer calf yesterday morning and has returned to the milking rotation. We're very excited to see how she produces on her second lactation; she'll be helping us fill the milk gap as the Swiss start to slow down before their expected calvings late this fall.
And on top of all of that, we want to again wish all of the dads out there a very happy Father's Day, especially to our favorite farmer here in the holler. He tolerates and supports all of our crazy endeavors, sneaks out to milk cows before anyone else is even awake, and somehow has the patience to spend hours in the rain waiting for a heifer to cross the street and join her herd in the new beef field so that he doesn't stress her out. We couldn't do any of this without him, and we hope that he knows just how loved he is by his herds and his humans <3
